A Rosie Place for Children
South Bend, Indiana (serve all 92 IN counties)
Innovative and Exemplary (2019):
A Rosie Place for Children in South Bend, IN, the first (and only) specialty hospital in Indiana, serving all 92 counties, exclusively supporting medically fragile children and their families by providing highly equipped hospital care for the most complex pediatric conditions in a home-away-from-home environment. During its nearly 20-year history, A Rosie Place for Children has actively encouraged self-care for families beyond just “taking a break” and focuses on living and quality of life for children who are medically fragile.
The number of families served at A Rosie Place for Children grows each year with hundreds of “sleepovers” ranging from one to ten nights each year! Families that are served by the respite program return again and again knowing their child is loved and receives exceptional skilled nursing care. A Rosie Place also offers quarterly events called HAVEN (Here and Visible––Educational Networking), bringing families together for the purpose of “engaging and empowering the community of families caring for children who are medically fragile,” by supporting parent-to-parent relationships and informal support systems. The HeARTworks Studio, an adaptive art and music space that will allow children to experience creative, sensory-rich activities during respite, was added to the campus. This enhancement strengthens the original respite model by supporting emotional expression, engagement, and joy alongside high-quality medical care.
Programs are initially reviewed after three years to assess continued status as Innovative and Exemplary, and every five years thereafter. Following their second review, recognition of A Rosie Place for Children as Innovative and Exemplary was extended to January 1, 2031.
