Child Care Aware® of America Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Respite Care

Child Care Aware® of America Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Respite Care in Arlington, VA has been serving military families across the country who have children birth to 17-years with special needs for ten years with high-quality, in-home childcare. Finding and paying for high-quality childcare for children with special needs presents significant challenges for military parents who are often away from their families’ support. Through EFMP Respite Care, eligible parents are helped to interview with and select from a pool of appropriately trained and screened providers who are matched to meet the special needs of the family. Care providers receive continuous training and mentoring geared to the special circumstances of the children in their care, and provided by local agencies near military. The local agencies work with families to find the providers who best match the special needs of the children.

Programs are reviewed every three years to assess continued status as Innovative and Exemplary. Following their review, recognition of Child Care Aware of America Exceptional Family Member Program Respite Care was extended to January 1, 2026.
