Webinar: Respite Services
in the series Getting to Yes for Launch: Overcoming Challenges to Implement Comprehensive Dementia Care
National Dementia Care Collaborative
Experts from the University of Minnesota and ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center discussed the importance of respite services for caregivers to people living with dementia. Presenters identified the benefits of respite, barriers to accessing respite, and strategies for overcoming obstacles to respite use. They also summarized current efforts to facilitate innovation in dementia respite across the U.S. Future directions as they pertain to advancing dementia respite research were also discussed.

• Jill Kagan is Director of the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center, which includes the Lifespan Respite Technical Assistance and Resource Center funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, and leads ARCH’s policy division, the National Respite Coalition. ARCH provides training and technical assistance on all aspects of respite care to federal and state agencies, coalitions, providers, aging and disability organizations, community and faith-based groups, family caregivers, and the public. Jill serves on national advisory boards for caregiving initiatives, including the Alzheimer’s Association’s Center for Dementia Respite Innovation, USAging’s Innovations in Family Caregiver Services and Supports, and the BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence in Dementia Caregiving. She is a faculty appointee to the RAISE Act Family Caregiving Advisory Council and a Subject Matter Expert for the Grandfamilies and Kinship Support Network
• Joe Gaugler is the Robert L. Kane Endowed Chair in Long-Term Care & Aging in the School of Public Health and a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota. He is the Director of the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation, Director of the CDC-funded BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Caregiving, Director of the National Institute on Aging-funded EMBRACE AD/ADRD Roybal and State Alzheimer’s Research Support Centers, and Editor-in-Chief of The Gerontologist. His research focuses on dementia care innovation.
