Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Adult Day Services and the Families They Serve
To assess the impact of the pandemic on Adult Day Services (ADS), a twenty-item survey was used to examine services provided, staffing, finances, and plans to reopen. Twenty-two sites participating in the Adult Day Service Plus study, which is a randomized controlled trial testing the provision of caregiver support onsite at ADS, were queried. According to survey respondents, most closed due to COVID-19. A majority of sites needed to furlough or terminate staff. Telephone support, food delivery, medical check-ins and virtual activity services were provided, mostly without reimbursement. ADS have the potential as an innovative platform to offer community-based services.
