Breakout Discussion Group: When Respite Requirements Limit Access
Scenario: A family caregiver contacts your program seeking respite support. She provides 24/7 care at home for her adult child, who has significant medical needs. Her child lives with her, and she manages all daily care despite not being a licensed nurse. The caregiver has been told that respite must be provided by a nurse. However, her monthly respite voucher is capped at $125, which covers only one to two hours of skilled nursing care at current rates ($50–$130 per hour)—and only if a nurse is available. The Challenge: The caregiver expresses frustration and resentment. She feels it’s unreasonable to pay for skilled nursing care when her immediate need is for short-term supervision—such as watching her child while she runs errands or shops for groceries. She believes the requirement fails to recognize her expertise as a long-term caregiver and limits the usefulness of her respite benefit. She wants to know whether there are other respite options that could better meet her needs.
Breakout Discussion Group: Weathering Changes in Key Staff
Scenario: The key leader in your organization—the charismatic individual who launched the respite initiative and has been instrumental in sustaining it statewide—plans to retire in three months. At the same time, the staff member who would most logically assume this role will be on maternity leave when the retirement occurs. The Challenge: Although you have been in your position for less than a year, you are being asked to step into a leadership role during this transition to ensure continuity of the program and maintain progress toward established goals.
