2020 Respite Research Summit
This virtual summit was held September 29 and 30, 2020.
Overview
A focus of the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center is to collect, synthesize, disseminate and stimulate research to improve respite practice and sustainability. The Expert Panel on Respite Research, convened by ARCH in collaboration with the Administration for Community Living, was key to helping advance this mission by engaging experts in the field in informed discussions of current respite research and possibilities for future investigation. In 2015, ARCH released recommendations and a research framework for conducting focused research on respite care in a final report from the Expert Panel, Research Agenda for Respite Care: Deliberations of an Expert Panel of Researchers, Advocates and Funders.
Following the release of the Panel's report, ARCH brought together researchers, funders, and interested parties, in a Respite Research Consortium to help implement the Panel's research recommendations to strengthen the evidence base for respite. Building upon their work, ARCH convened a virtual Respite Research Summit in September 2020 for researchers in the ARCH Research Consortium, members of the Expert Panel on Respite Research, international and U.S. researchers, funders, respite providers and services, advocates and others who are interested in helping to advance a respite research agenda and strengthen respite services.
The objectives of the Respite Research Summit were to:
- Provide an overview of the current status of respite and related research;
- Highlight respite and promising practice-based research with reference to the Expert Panel research framework;
- Review progress made in implementing the Expert Panel's six recommendations; and
- Identify gaps in and barriers to respite research, the translation of research into practice, and steps forward to address these.
Following the Summit, a summary report with findings, Advancing Respite Research, was published.
ARCH wishes to thank The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Wareheim Foundation, in addition to ACL, for their generous support for the Summit.
