What are State Respite Coalitions and how do they differ from Lifespan Respite Programs?
Most State Respite Coalitions are grassroots membership organizations composed of state and local, public and private organizations, which represent individuals with disabilities or chronic conditions of all ages; family caregivers; community and faith-based organizations and respite, social service and health care providers. Coalitions may be run by volunteers or paid staff. Most exist as informal structures, while others are formalized within or as 501(c)(3) nonprofit entities or are administered by a state agency. ARCH has resources to help you build or strengthen your respite coalition.
Most often Respite Coalition activities are focused on advocacy, networking, public education, and connecting family caregivers to respite and other services. Many coalitions also provide respite care provider and family caregiver training, and help families pay for respite through self-directed respite voucher programs.
State Lifespan Respite Grant Programs, funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, are administered by a designated state government lead agency, which works in collaboration with a State Respite Coalition and an Aging and Disability Resource Center/No Wrong Door System. The purpose of a Lifespan Respite Care Program is to implement statewide systems of coordinated, community-based respite for family caregivers caring for individuals with special needs of any age or condition.
Through the state agency grantee or the state respite coalition, the Lifespan Respite Care Program may also help families pay for planned or emergency respite with respite vouchers, stipends or grant programs, support volunteer and faith-based respite programs, and recruit and train respite care workers and volunteers.
